McIntosh Coming to the Big Apple

With their 5th Round pick, the New York Giants selected R.J. McIntosh out of the University of Miami.  The versatile, Five-Technique Defensive Tackle is another big bodied player (6’5” 286 pounds) that Dave Gettleman covets.  He played defensive tackle at Miami, but is quick enough to play defensive end in a 3-4 scheme as well.

  • Gave All-World Guard Quenton Nelson fits when he played against him in ’17
  • Athletic with speed and quickness. Had 7 pass breakups last year to go along with 12.5 tackles for loss and 2.5 sacks.
  • Constantly in opposing backfield from both the DT and DE spots.
  • Blocked 2 Field Goals on special teams. Can excel in that role at his height.

This selection, along with the selection of B.J. Hill, allows for the Giants to finally have a solid rotation on the defensive line this year.  This is something that was missing for 5+ years. It is a trademark of the Great Giants defensive teams.  They now have several big-bodied players to compete against the run and pass, without having to wear-down any of the starters.

McIntosh will need to hit the weight room to improve his weight and strength to succeed in the NFL.  He will have trouble playing against the run, especially against bigger offensive lineman.  McIntosh will need to be developed to reach his full potential, but he has a lot of attributes to like, especially with a 5th round pick.  Another solid pick, with the chance to be a great pick if Coach Bettcher can get the most out of McIntosh.
