More Hog than Mollie

With the 34th pick of the 2018 NFL Draft, the New York Giants selected Will Hernandez out of the University of Texas-El Paso.  Dave Gettleman said that he wanted to get big bodied players, or “Hog Mollies” and Hernandez is the very definition of that type of player.  Standing at 6’2” 327 pounds, Will Hernandez is one of, if not the most, imposing player in this draft.

  • Great in the run game, with the ability to pull.  Finishes off every play
  • Doesn’t like people and plays with a great mean streak
  • Rated 99.6 in pass blocker efficiency per PFF.  Allowed 1 sack in 3 yrs as starter
  • Most often compared to Pro-Bowler Richie Incognito

Hernandez is instantly upgraded.  He is the “inside mauler” the Giants have been missing for years.  Hernandez , the newest Giants “Hog Mollie” was born and raised in Las Vegas, Nevada and generally thought of as a 1st round talent.  To acquire him in the 2nd round, it presented great value at a position of major need for the Giants.  He started all 49 games from 2014 to 2017.  He is not a flawless prospect.  Some of his weaknesses are:

  • Short arms allow for longer armed opponents to get into his chest and win battles
  • Not always the most technically sound player
  • Doesn’t always play true to his strength.

Improved Offensive Line:

All in all, Dave Gettleman got what many considered the 2nd or 3rd best Guard in the draft.  He will solidify the right side of the line, greatly improve the running game, while also keeping Eli Manning upright.  The Offensive line is greatly improved with Nate Solder and Patrick Omameh on the left and now Hernandez on the right.  A new Hog Mollie from Gettleman.  Great pick.
