Giants vs. Redskins Recap: Rant & Rave Week 3

Thursday Night the Giants took home their first win of the season and when looking at the make up of the NFC East, the division winner could be an 8 & 8 team.

Week 3 Rant & Rave.  Bam!

Rant: The old adage that every offensive skilled position player wants the ball and that, “I’m open” mentality is true.   So, when Giants Quarterback, Eli Manning throws the ball to wide open Larry Donnell right down the seam why doesn’t he catch it?

Have the fans grown weary of this guy yet?   How about when Donnell does catch it…he doesn’t flip upside down over the defensive back…EVERY time.  This guy needs to catch the ball and run like he has purpose. He dropped what looked like a sure touchdown catch and his ran after the catch is pathetic.  Eli needs a play-maker at Tight End.  Miss those Shockey days.

Rave:  Someone woke up Rueben Randle.   The maligned receiver must have realized he is in a contract year and decided to play ball.  His normal slow start off the line of scrimmage had improved and he was open for some yardage underneath and over the top. Randle caught 7-of-7 targets for 116 yards and a touchdown in a win over the Redskins.   Now he sustain that type of play week in and week out.

Rant: The pass rush is dismal.   When the Giants face a better quarterback they are going to experience problems.  Robert Ayers has developed into a nice player for the Giants; however he was injured against the Redskins and relying on Ayers to be a difference maker will only disappoint you because his supporting cast is weak.  Think I’m crazy…her’s the stats.

A combined seven pressures on 102 pass rushes from George Selvie (9 tackles), Kerry Wynn (14 tackles) and Damontre Moore (2 tackles).

Rave:  Nice bounce back week for Eli.  He looked more comfortable and efficient with the ball.   While I would like to see him spread the ball around a bit more, there is not much to complain about when your quarterback is hitting your former LSU wide receiver tandem to the tune of 195 yards and two scores on 14 catches.

Rant: Shane Vereen is a very good player and should be given a bigger role as Eli’s right hand man in the NY Giants offense.   Whether in the passing game or the running game, Vereen is very good with the ball in his hands.  While he might look bigger than Tiki Barber…they are exactly the same height and weight (5’10 205lbs.).

Ben McAdoo needs to expand his role in the offense giving Eli more weapons.  The running game has not been a threat in years…time to change that.

Rave: This pains me to say it, but Jayron Hosley might have found something.   While this undersized corner has not seen much playing time without being roasted, the 2015 version of Jayron Hosley is commendable.  With DRC out with a concussion, No. 28 have done a an admirable job.   His play has helped Spags from having to move Trumaine McBride out of the slot and verifies his roster spot.

Double Rave:  One year later, almost to the day….Prince Amukamara has picked off Redskins quarterback Kirk Cousins.   September 25th 2014, Prince intercepted a Cousin pass and again on Thursday one year later.
