New York Giants: Full 7 round Mock Draft

By Michael Stewart (@golferbad)

The 2017 Draft is upon us and I like many I have assembled my 2017 version mock draft for the Giants. As in years past, I will not project any possible trades by the Giants and just keep it a simple as possible. We all know the needs for the Giants and like every draft; will the Giants draft BPA or need? Sitting at #23, GM Jerry Reese could be faced with that decision and throughout his career; his record is about 50% for BPA. Below I will project my pick and the Giants pick with alternate selections for both:

Round 1

My Pick: OT-Ryan Ramczyk-6’5/314 (Wisconsin): Ramczyk is a blue-collar earth mover/pass protector at the LT position and would immediately upgrade the Giants OL from day one. As long as his hip injury gets a clean bill of health and if he is still on the board; Ramczyk could be the Giants pick.

Alternate Pick:  ILB-Zach Cunningham-6’4/230 (Vanderbilt): Can play all 3 linebacker positions and is a tackling machine.

Giants Pick:  TE-David Njoku-06’4/245 (Miami): Njoku had 43 catches for 698 yards and 8 TDS and would have had better numbers if Miami featured him more on offense. Njoku could be the best of the TE’s in this draft, despite O.J Howard getting all the ink. Njoku has the potential be a receiving threat in the NFL with his freakish talent, but needs to improve on his run blocking.

Alternate Pick: ILB- Zach Cunningham-6’4/230 (Vanderbilt):  The streak has ended as the Giants finally draft an LBer in the 1st round.  Cunningham is strong at the point of attack and has excellent Football instincts.

Round 2

My Pick: RB-D’onta Foreman-6’1/250 (Texas): Foreman had a tremendous 2016 season and was one of the most productive runners in the nation. He averaged 6.3 yards per carry for 2,028 yards with 15 touchdowns. Foreman’s receiving stats wasn’t his primary weapon (7 catches/75 yards), but he have above average ability in that department. Forman is a load as a runner who can run between the tackles, around the edge and gain extra yards after 1st contact.

Alternate Pick: DE-DeMarcus Walker-6’2/275 (Florida State): Equally disruptive against the run/pass. Walker would be a nice fit within the Giants DL rotation.

Giants Pick: OT- Roderick Johnson-6’6/325 (Florida State): Johnson had an up and down season with the Seminoles, but his raw talent can’t be overlooked. Many NFL scouts love Johnson’s size and length to protect on the edge. Johnson is equal in his run blocking/pass protection skills; which is above average and should be a very competitive LT in the NFL.

Alternate Pick: DT-Chris Wormley-6’5/303 (Michigan): Wormley has nice size/quickness & can play DT or DE. Moves his feet very well & is very athletic for his size.

Round 3

My Pick: TE-Adam Shaheen-6’6/277 (Ashland):  Shaheen draft stock is on the rise as Scouts have compared him to All-Pro TE Rob Gronkowski of the New England Patriots.  His rare combination of size and speed to go along with his freakish athleticism; makes Shaheen a very intriguing prospect. Shaheen can also run block well; which will be an added bonus to the Giants running game.

Alternate Pick: RB-Samaje Perine-5’11/234 (Oklahoma):  Perine is a power RB who excels between the tackles. High ratio of yards gained after 1st contact.

Giants Pick:  DTNazair Jones-6’4/300 (North Carolina):  Jones has the strength and athletic ability to excel at the DT position. Extremely difficult to move off the line, Jones often covered two gaps at one time in college successfully. Very solid as a run stopper and does have a little pass rush ability as well.

Alternate Pick: OT-Will Holden-6’7/311 (Vanderbilt): Holden showed the ability to anchor and stay on his man more often than not. He can handle any version of a defensive lineman. He is a guy that plays with reliable technique, but will need add the needed strength to his large frame in time. Holden will be a starter sooner rather than later.

Round 4

My Pick: DT-Montravius Adams-6’3/308 (Auburn): Adams could go in the late 3rd or early 4th in the draft, however; I’m projecting him to fall into the late 4th round for the Giants to consider him. Adams is very quick for his size and can play along the line either as a DT or DE.

Alternate Pick: OT- Julie’n Davenport-6’6/315 (Bucknell): All the ingredients are there for Davenport to be a solid LT at the NFL level.

Giants Pick:  OLB-Tyus Bowser-6’2/245 (Houston):  Bowser is an excellent athlete who excels in both run defense and in pass coverage. What makes Bowser more appealing is his ability to rush the passer. Needs a little more strength to handle big OL, but that will come in time.

Alternate Pick: TE-Gerald Everett-6’4/240 (S. Alabama): Everett recorded 43 catches for 648 yards with 4 TDS in 2016. Many scouts have compared him to Redskins TE Jordan Reed.

Round 5

My Pick: DE-Keionta Davis-6’3/270 (Chattanooga): Davis has been one of most consistent pass rushers over the last two seasons in college football; which earned him an invitation to the Senior Bowl. Davis has the size and strength to become a reliable DE in the NFL. His 10.5 sacks along with 11.5 tackles’ for losses shows his skill set to create plays and finish them off.

Alternate Pick: DT: Jarron Jones-6’5/315 (Notre Dame):  Jones has elite size, length and athleticism for his position. Explosive out of his stance and has a good bull rush. Jones has good arm length & has powerful hands that pack a punch. Raw prospect with a ton of upside

Giants Pick: RB-Brian Hill-6’0/220 (Wyoming):  Solid runner that is equally effective running between the tackles or around the corner. Hill is excellent in yards gained after 1st contact & has good vision and balance.

Alternate Pick: DE-Deatrich Wise Jr.-6’5/280 (Arkansas): Wise Jr. has the physical tools to be a solid DE in the NFL, size, strength and speed. If developed properly; could be a steal on day 3.

Round 6

My Pick: DE/OLB-Josh Carraway-6’3/250 (TCU): Callaway is a pure speed rusher off the edge with immense athleticism. Carraway can play along the DL at times and also as an OLB in certain defensive schemes. Carraway has a high ceiling and could Transition more into a OLB at the NFL Level.

Alternate Pick: TE: Cole Hikutini-6’5/248 (Louisville): Reliable TE who always seems to be in the right place at the right time. Hikutini has been compared to Jason Witten.

Giants Pick: DE-Hunter Dimick-6’3/266 (Utah): Dimick recorded a decent season for Utah in 2016 with 54 tackles (20 for losses) and 14.5 sacks. Dimick is still a bit raw, but will have time to learn his craft behind JPP and Verron.

Alternate Pick: CB-Rasul Douglas-6’2/210 (West Virginia):  Reese has never neglected to draft a DB during his tenure as the Giants GM. Douglas combination of good size and has a nose for the ball.

Round 7

My Pick: OLB-Javancy Jones-6’2/245 (Jackson State): Jones played all but three games in 2016; which is why he is projected a Day 3 pick. However; when healthy, Jones displayed quickness off the edge and the ability to handle OL at the point of attack. He is equally talented against the run as well as a pass rusher.

Alternate Pick: DT-Ryan Glasgow-6’3/300 (Michigan): Glasgow had a quality season for Michigan. Glasgow is another blue-collar guy with an endless motor.

Giants Pick: OLB-Javancy Jones-6’2/245 (Jackson State):  Reese really likes what Jones brings to the table. Jones is an early day 2 talent & would be a steal on day 3.

Alternate Pick: RB Elijah Hood-6’0/220 (North Carolina): Minor injuries in 2016 set Hood back a bit and made him a day 3 pick. However; Hood is a big physical back that can run well between the tackles.

Final Thoughts: Many scouts and football analysts have said that this draft has 50 prospects talented enough to be drafted in the top 32 spots in the 1st round.  Personally; I believe the overall depth in this draft is the best in recent years and should provide the Giants with ample opportunity to have a very successful draft.

In both my mock draft the Giants, I had both drafts select 4 defensive players and 3 offensive players. Despite a more pressing need to address offense as a priority, each mock draft fell toward the defensive side when selection was made. Also, many reports that the Giants could draft a QB to be Manning’s successor; I felt that this year’s draft is a little weak as next year’s draft will have more talent coming out.

So in my mock draft & the Giants, I decided to not draft a QB this season as the Giants have other pressing needs to address. With that being said; it wouldn’t surprise me if Reese does look for a QB during the UDFA phase as there could be some QB’s worthy to be considered.
