The New York Giants GM Dave Gettleman fresh from attending the NFL combine pulls off his first trade as the Giants GM by acquiring linebacker Alec Ogletree of the Los Angeles Rams for the Giants 2018 4th round pick (compensation) and their 6th pick. The trade won’t be official until March 14 under league rules, but this trade in unofficially a done deal, Ogletree recently signed an extension with the Rams last fall placing him under contract until 2021 with $18M guaranteed with $33M over the first three years.

Unfortunately; the Rams seemed be under financial constraints and aggressive found a suitor in the Giants to get this deal done. The former first round selection back in 2013 is now a Giant and the best linebacker on the roster with only B.J Goodson under contract.

The possibility of the Giants converting to a 3-4 scheme and Defensive Coordinator James Bettcher has always been a fan of Ogletree and his talents on the football field. The arrival of Ogletree doesn’t eliminate the possibility of the Giants re-signing Devon Kennard; which has been reported. Unless another team over spends for the services of Kennard, the Giants could bring him back into the fold.

So with this move, the Giants only have five picks in the 2018 draft and still have other areas to fill on their roster. Expect Gettleman to be proactive come March 12th when other teams can pursue unrestricted free agents and the target as reported will be offensive guard Andrew Norwell. Many reports have already stated that Norwell to the Giants is a done deal unofficially. If so, the Giants are moving the right direction leading up the 2018 season.
