New York Giants: GM Jerry Reese CB Options in the 2017 Draft

By Michael Stewart (golferbad)

Round 1

CB-Gareon Conley-6’0/195 (Ohio State):  Conley has good size, quickness and is very versatile. There are mixed reports on Conley as most scouts’ view him as a late 1st rounder and a solid CB in the NFL; while other scouts believe his hype is more about where he played and the talent around him.

CB-Kevin King-6’3/192 (Washington): King is a ball hawk with good size and length and has played very consistent throughout his college career.

Round 2

CB-Fabian Moreau-6’0/202 (UCLA): Moreau had a solid week at the East-West Shrine game. Showcasing his size, physicality and coverage skills; which has put Moreau as a round 2 prospect? Moreau likes to play hard and physical; which has many scouts intrigued with his potential.

CB-Quincy Wilson-6’1/213 (Florida): In 2016, Wilson was a solid CB for Florida with excellent speed athleticism to stay with WR. Wilson was possesses the size to matchup against larger WR’s in the NFL.  Wilson is not regarded as a top one on one cover CB and could be a liability if put in that situation.

Round 3

CB-Ahkello Witherspoon-6’3/195 (Colorado): Many NFL teams are taking notice with Witherspoon as he possesses good size and length at the CB position. Off field issues could push Witherspoon into the 3rd or 4th round, however; I believe a few teams will scoop him up in round 2.

CB-Howard Wilson-6’1/186 (Houston): Wilson is a little raw as he will be a underclassman entering the draft and many scouts feel an extra year in college would benefit him.  However; there’s no denying his skill set; which is why some NFL team will select him in round 3.

Round 4

CB-Brendan Langley-6’0/198 (Lamar): Langley had a solid at Lamar in 2016 with 43 tackles /7 passes broken up and 6 INTS. Langley has good size and runs well enough to stay with opposing WR.

CB-Rasul Douglas-6’2/204 (West Virginia): Douglas had limited playing time in 2015 as a junior and then burst onto the scene in 2016 by leading the nation with 8 INTS. Douglas combination of good size and has a nose for the ball. If not for his limited playing time, Douglas could have gone much earlier in the draft. If he is available in round 4 for Giants, GM Reese should consider him.

CB-Dwayne Thomas-6’0/186 (LSU): Thomas is very versatile as he can line up either in the slot or on the outside. Thomas shined against Alabama this season and could be a value pick in round 4.

Round 5

CB-Dwayne Thomas-6’0/186 (LSU): Thomas is very versatile as he can line up either in the slot or on the outside. Thomas shined against Alabama this season and could be a value pick in round 4.

CB-Chidobe Awizie-6’0/205 (Colorado): Awizie was under the radar while playing for Colorado, but many scouts believe that he would be a steal in round 5. Awizie has great ball hawk skills and plays physical and enjoys the one on one battle.

Round 6

CB-Damontae Kazee-5’10/183 (San Diego State): Kazee has no fear for his size and is not afraid to play physical. Excellent speed to go along with good instincts could make Kazee a steal in round 7.

CB-Marquez White-5’11/184 (Florida State): White could be a hit or miss as he does have decent speed, but needs to get stronger against NFL WR’s.  White would be solid last round selection and could be an asset as a depth CB and on special teams.

Round 7

CB-Des Lawrence-6’1/185 (North Carolina): Lawrence has nice size and speed with good instincts. Not a great cover man and would benefit more in a zone scheme in the NFL.

CB-Brandon Facyson-6’2/191 (Virginia Tech): Facyson showed flashes of his talents back in 2013 as a freshman and has slowly improved each year. Good size, speed and strength give Facyson a high-grade and a steal on day 3.

Final Thoughts: GM Jerry Reese has always had a love affair with CB’s on draft day; as he has drafted more CB’s/DB in the draft than any other position during his tenure. I expect Reese to once again select a CB in this draft; whether or not one is needed as you can never have too many quality CB’s and also the Giants have a bad history of CB’s staying healthy. In fact, it wouldn’t surprise me one bit if a projected CB drops to 23, Reese would be tempted. Hopefully; that scenario doesn’t play out.
