New York Giant Free Agent Decisions

Dave Gettleman and the New York Giants go into the offseason with a decent size list of Free Agents.  There are some tough decisions that lie ahead for Mr. Gettleman and Co., like, what to do with talented safety Landon Collins.

Here are some of the decisions I would make regarding the team’s potential Free Agents if I were in Dave Gettleman’s shoes:

Keepers:

Landon Collins – Biggest decision. Has shown All-Pro potential at times but is a real weak link in coverage.  I would “Franchise Tag” Collins and put him in a position to succeed by giving him a legit Free Safety or Coverage LB to work with.  Not worth big money yet.

Aldrick Rosas – No brainer.  One of the best kickers in the NFL.  Needs to be signed long-term.

Jamon Brown – Solidified the right side of the line this year.  You could do better, but you could do MUCH worse (see Patrick Omameh).  I would sign him back on a “prove it” deal and draft his backup.

Cody Latimer – When healthy, Latimer proved to be a useful 3rd WR and good special teamer.  Could be upgraded, but I would sign him back on a short-term deal.  This team lacks size at WR and Latimer provides that.

Kerry Wynn, Mario Edwards, and Josh Mauro – Solid depth players on the defensive line that should come back on the cheap.  Each player flashed in different ways.  They are not starters but needed for a good rotation.

Jon Halapio and Spencer Pulley – Both played decently in limited time.  Sign both back and let them battle for the Center spot with Evan Brown.  Both should be inexpensive.

B.W. Webb – Played admirably until he was exposed later in the season.  A good 4th cornerback that can play in the slot or outside. Good depth.  I would sign him back.

Russell Shepard – Good special teamer and good locker room guy, but expendable.

Let Go:

Curtis Riley – Most obvious move of the offseason.  This man should not be on an NFL roster.

Bennie Fowler – No need for Fowler if Latimer is back.  I expect a WR to be drafted as well.  Expendable player.

Corey Coleman – Did some nice things on Special Teams.  Inconsistent at WR.  Let him go.

Nathan Stupar – Solid special teamer but proved useless as a Linebacker.  Let him go.

Russell Shepard – Good special teamer and good locker room guy, but expendable.

Elijah Penny – Did well in limited time last year but isn’t a “true” fullback.  Let him go and upgrade the position if needed.  Ellison can play full back.

The New York Giants have now built-in their culture and system.  Unlike the 2018 offseason, the front office knows each one of these players inside out and will be able to make informed decisions on everyone.  Mr. Gettleman has made tough decisions before and will need to make a bunch more this offseason.  It starts with our own players.
