Daniel Jones lit up the Washington Redskins secondary on Sunday, to the tune of 28-42, 352 yards and 5 touchdowns. The Giants rookie now has 23 touchdowns to 11 picks this season with 2,726 passing yards to go along with 253 rushing yards.
He looked in complete control, going back and forth with fellow first-round pick Dwayne Haskins. Unfortunately, Haskins left with an injured ankle and did not complete the battle. Jones snapped his 8 game losing streak and helped the GMen to a 41-35 victory while breaking a New York Giants rookie passing TD record. Jones surpassed Charlie Conerly with his 23rd TD.
Sunday vs. The Eagles:
Jones has a chance to beat Wentz on Sunday if everything breaks his way, including throwing the ball to the Tight End, which the Giants rarely do.
Fumbles:
Jones fumbled again on Sunday and will need to make fixing it a major priority in the offseason.
Although it’s been another frustrating season for fans, there are some key positive takeaways to look at. The most important one for this franchise is that a year ago they were a disaster at quarterback. Now, at least they’re a disaster that has their future set at the most important position.
2020 QB Room:
So what will the QB room look like next season?
- Jones as the starter is a no brainer
- Eli will certainly move on, whether to retire or start somewhere else
- Alex Tanney is a possibility, he’s on the team now and knows the system (Assuming Pat Shurmur comes back)
- Veteran backup? With Eli gone, look for Dave Gettleman to sign a Ryan Fitzpatrick type to add value to the QB meetings, and help Jones continue to learn
- Rookie? This isn’t out of the question if late in the draft a player falls to them. He could be a career backup for Jones if he stays healthy.
It will be interesting to see how his team is built around the young quarterback, and ultimately who will be coaching him next year.
