Giants Should Have Interest in Deone Bucannon

The New York Giants staring a 2-4 start to their 2019 season. With Ryan Connelly on Injured Reserve with a Torn ACL, the Giants would be wise to “kick the tires” on the recently cut Deone Bucannon.  With the lack of talent on their roster at the Linebacker position, taking a chance on Bucannon can only help this beleaguered unit.

Bucannon’s release had more to do with the projected 3rd-Round Compensatory pick that the Buccaneers would be in line to receive than Bucannon’s play on the field.  Bucannon has played in all five games this year for the Bucs but has not cracked the starting lineup and has mostly contributed on Special Teams.  Due to the lack of playing time (8 total snaps on defense thus far), the Bucs made the easy decision to receive the projected 3rd round pick over keeping a depth player.

Bucannon’s familiarity with James Bettcher’s system will be of great help as he would step in a start from day one. Under Bettcher in Arizona, Deone had the best years of his career, from 2014-2017.  If Bucannon is fully healthy, he is a hybrid-Linebacker that can run and cover, while also having the ability to blitz the quarterback.  This is exactly what the Giants have been missing, someone who can just make plays.

The Rush Take:

If Giant fans are forced to watch David Mayo and Nate Stupar roaming the field any longer, missing assignments and tackles, we may all lose our minds.  With their remote chances of making the playoffs in 2019, the Giants should be looking at players that can actually contributor. They know Nate Stupar can not, that is why they cut him two weeks ago.  If the money works out, the Giants should make the move and bring Bucannon to help this defense.
