NY Giants are Thin at Cornerback – Locals CB’s Can Help

by Spiro Kasabian @Nyspawtsguy_spi

The New York Giants need help on defense.  Many of you might not remember this, but the Giants franchise was once known for having great defenses.  This has not been the case for the better part of the last decade.  The Giants, once again, found themselves in the bottom half of most defensive rankings last year.

A lot of the defense’s issues stemmed from a lack of pass rush.  Just as equal of a culprit was the Giants secondary, which has been lacking talent for most of this decade.  This position became so scarce in talent last year that B.W. Webb, a free agent picked up off the streets at the beginning of the season, was playing a majority of the starting snaps at the #2 Cornerback position.  Grant Haley, an undrafted Cornerback out of Penn State, was playing a ton of snaps at the starting Nickleback position (and played admirably).

No Depth:

The Giants go into the 2019 season barren at the Cornerback position.  A position that, many would argue, is one of the most important positions in today’s NFL with how much teams throw the ball.  The Giants currently have Janoris Jenkins, last year’s Supplemental Draft pick Sam Beal (who is coming off injury and has had many shoulder issues in the past), and Grant Haley as their only viable Cornerback’s on the roster.  This position should be one of the team’s main focuses in the 2019 Draft.

Two Pennsylvania school Cornerbacks could be attractive options if they Giants decide to pass on selecting a Corner in the First Round.  Amani Oruwariye from Penn State and Rock Ya-Sin from Temple could both be Day Two selections that the Giants could show interest in.

Amani Oruwariye

  • Height and Length are pluses – 6’1″ 203 lbs.
  • Physical CB at the line of scrimmage who can help in run defense
  • Good Ball-Skills; 7 INTs over the last 2 seasons
  • Doesn’t have great makeup speed (timed well at the combine)
  • Lacks fluid hips and needs to work on technique

Rock Ya-Sin

  • Good height and length – 6’2″ 190 lbs.
  • Not a ton of big game experience (transferred from Presbyterian; one season at Temple)
  • Has all the physical attributes to become a lock-down corner if coached up well
  • Very good at mirroring WRs
  • Helped his draft stock at the Senior Bowl where he stood out

Both Cornerbacks should be there when the Giants are picking at #37, and Oruwariye might even be there for the Giants in Round 3.  This position absolutely needs to be addressed, and if they Giants do not select one of the top CBs in the First Round, these two cornerbacks would be good selections in Day Two.
