With their 1st pick (4th overall) in the 2020 NFL draft the New York Giants select offensive Tackle Andrew Thomas out of Georgia. Passing on playmaker OLB Isaiah Simmons, OT Tristan Wirfs, and Jedrick Wills.
These three were the top options for the Giants for most of the time leading up to the draft. So once the dust settled, the Giants decided on Thomas. It’s unclear if the Giants were looking to trade back in the 1st round, perhaps they were as it took Gettleman nearly nine minutes to turn in his pick.
How Does Thomas fit the Giants system:
Thomas is the most polished offensive tackle in this draft in terms of his overall makeup. Thomas started as a freshman at right tackle at Georgia and then transitioned over to left tackle and excelled in the toughest college football conference (SEC). Thomas is a dominant run blocking and more importantly a solid pass protector; which fits perfectly with the Giant’s new OC Jason Garrett offensive scheme; which requires the offensive line to contain their blocks a little longer.
How Does Thomas not fit the Giants system:
Thomas overall game checks all the boxes and this may not be the most glamorous choice, but it’s the right choice. Thomas, Wills or Wirfs were rated very closely and I believe Thomas got the final vote because he excelled at LT.
Final Thoughts: The game plan for Thomas will compete and more than likely win the battle at right tackle for 2020. Cameron Fleming and Nick Gates will serve as reliable and solid backups. Thomas will be the Giants left tackle starting in 2021, once the Giants release Nate Solder and will finally give the Giants a left tackle that could be a mainstay for the next decade.
