Introduction:  The 2020 NFL draft is soon approaching and after reviewing every social media coverage regarding the New York Giants options. GM Dave Gettleman and Head Coach Joe Judge will have the toughest decision to make once they are on the clock with the amount of talented prospects that will be available with the 4th overall pick.  After reading hundreds of articles and viewing hundreds of mock drafts, I’ve come up with the top 3 scenario’s that are more likely to happen in the 1st round.

  1. Giants stay at #4:

Gettleman has never traded back in the 1st round of the draft during his 7 year GM career. There have been opportunities during that time to do so, however; Gettleman maintained that he never received an offer good enough to justify moving back. Perhaps with new Head Coach Joe Judge reportedly being more involved; this will change. However; if the Giants decide to stay at #4, based on all the mock drafts and articles; their top 3 options would be (OLB) Isaiah Simmons, (OT) Tristan Wirfs or (OT) Jedrick Wills. Any of these prospects would be a great addition for the Giants as they would address major needs on either side of the line of scrimmage.

  • Giants trade back within 3 spots:

Gettleman and Judge could decide to trade back within 3 spots as it’s reported that the Dolphins, Chargers and possibly the Panthers might be willing to trade up. In this scenario, the Giants could pick up additional picks and possibly still get any of the three prospects from scenario one. The majority of the fan based that I’ve been reaching out through on twitter have expressed the Giants trading back within 3 spots and so would I.

  • Giants trade back more than 3 spots:

This 3rd scenario was the least likely to occur according to all the data I’ve read, but it is still a possibility. A team like the Jacksonville Jaguars sitting at #9 or the Las Vegas Raiders sitting at #12 and #19 could want to make a bold move and leap frog over the other three teams for a quarterback. If so, they would need to overpay with picks in this draft and/or in future drafts. This scenario was the least favorable choice among the Giants fan base as it would more than likely keep the Giants from drafting any of their top 3 targets.

Final Thoughts: Despite the fact that GM Dave Gettleman is considered old school and set in his ways. I believe he understands the importance of this draft, not only for the Giants future, but also for his job security. Gettleman must have a successful draft and I’m not just referring to the 1st round only, but the entire draft. In my opinion, Gettleman needs to at least find three starters from this draft and have many of the picks contribute in 2020 and beyond. Gettleman did a better job in free agency than his previous two years for the Giants with the players he brought in.  A few weeks back, my 1st edition mock draft article I wore the GM hat and was very aggressive with four trades in total. The Giants have 10 picks to start with and if they do trade back in the 1st round, I would bet the house that we will see another trade involving picks and/or players to move up somewhere between rounds 3-5. My final mock draft will have the projected Giants picks and my picks as well with no projected trades included.
