The Giants Offensive Line Ready to Go

A lot of focus in the last few NY Giants seasons has been discussions around the offensive line.  This season, the NFL schedule allows us to evaluate them right off the bat: The revamped line will be put to the test in week one against a strong Jacksonville Jaguars front seven that includes:  Malik Jackson, Calais Campbell and Myles Jack

At left tackle, GM Dave Gettleman went big and signed the best one available in Nate Solder.  Solder has Super Bowl experience, and was well coached in New England under Bill Belichick and Dante Scarnecchia.  His scouting report still holds true, as the 6’8” 325 pounder has athleticism and agility that is rare for the position.  He will definitely provide an upgrade over Ereck Flowers.  Next to him on the left side at Guard is rookie Will Hernandez, who has the makings of being a big time player for years to come.  Our NY Giants featured Columnist, Michael Stewart outlined that in his piece here.

The position battle at center ended last week when Brett Jones was traded to the Vikings.  Jon Halapio...or PIO won the job in camp and will hold that position down for Eli Manning.  John Greco will move over and back up the center spot.

Free agent signing Patrick Omameh from the Jaguars played well down the stretch last season on a very good offensive line that went deep into the playoffs. Omameh will be the New York Giants starting Right Guard.  So far he has had an average pre-season; however, is still is a huge upgrade of John Jerry.  When Omameh gets in a rhythm he is a very good run blocker and which will help one Saquon Barkley.

Ereck Flowers is at right tackle…enough said.

Overall Up-Grade:

The talent level is significantly better, but the most successful offensive line units around the league have chemistry.  The NY Giant lines from a decade ago didn’t have 5 all pro individual players, but together they played great.  How quickly this unit gels will be an important factor to the success of the season.  Pat Shurmur did a fantastic job with the Vikings offensive line last year and a similar  rebuilding process.  Time will tell if the right improvements were made.  By the look of Eli Manning and his confidence, the Giants are headed in the right direction.
