Introduction: The New York Giants losing streak is now at nine with their Overtime lost to the Eagles 23-17. This was a tale of two halves as the Giants dominated the 1st half and the Eagles dominated the 2nd half. The return of Eli Manning was nothing short of a storybook ending in the 1st half as Manning threw for 179 yards and two touchdowns passes to wide receiver Darius Slayton to give the Giants a 17-3 lead going into the half.

However; the Eagles came out in the 2nd half led by their defense to smothered Manning and the Giants offense until the Eagles offense got some momentum. The Eagles are now tied for 1st place with the Dallas Cowboys in the NFC East and the Giants remain in last place at 2-11. Here are my top 5 reasons why the Giants lost:

  • Giants Secondary: Once again the Giants secondary were unable to contain the Eagles receivers who were short-handed due to injuries to two of their starting wide receivers. Cornerback Sam Beal led the way with a couple of holding calls that prolonged two Eagle drives.
  • Red Zone: The Giants were 0 for 1 to the Eagles 3 for 4 in the red zone. The Eagles capitalized in the red zone; which led to the tying and then winning touchdown in overtime.
  • 3rd Down Efficiency: The Giants finished went 2-12 on 3rd down conversion to the Eagles 9-21, despite the Giants dominance in the 1st half, they struggled on 3rd down the entire game.
  • Total Yards: 90% of the Giants total yards came in the 1st half as they finished with 255 yards to the Eagles 418. The Giants defense disappeared in the 2nd half and couldn’t make any big plays.
  • Time of Possession: The Giants only had the ball for 21.:59 on offense as that total was mostly in the 1st half. The Eagles had the ball for 42.:51 and that total was mostly in the 2nd half.

Hero:

Quarterback Carlson Wentz struggled early in the game, however; showed a lot of determination and led the Eagles to 20 consecutive points in the 2nd half to get the win.

Goat:

The Giants offense and defense in the 2nd half deserve this honor with their Jekyll and Hyde performance.

Final Thoughts

The Giants remain in the #2 spot in the draft with this disappointing lost to the Eagles. Next week they travel to Miami to face the 3-10 Dolphins and it is unclear whether or not Eli Manning or Daniel Jones will get the start. Rookie wide receiver Darius Slayton continues to shine with a 5 receptions for 154 yards and two touchdown performance and that was all in the 1st half as Eli Manning failed to make an effort to throw in his direction in the 2nd half.
