Introduction: The New York Giants continue their losing ways, falling to the Detroit Lions 31-26. As expected, both defenses showcased no defense as the offensive side of the ball dominated today’s game. Both offenses combined for a total of 745 yards as both quarterbacks passed for over 300 yards each. One glance at the stat sheet it would appear that the Giants had won this game, however; they failed to lead in one major category and that would be scoring the most points. Here are my top 3 reasons why the Giants lost:

  1. Big Plays:  The Lions made three big plays to the Giants none. Quarterback Matthew Stafford had two touchdown passes (41 & 49) one to Marvin Jones and the other to Kenny Golladay. This has been a pattern thus far during the season for the Giants.
  2. Turnovers: The Giants continue to cough up the ball and it really hurt them in this game as quarterback Daniel Jones continues to show a flaw of couching up the ball as one of his two was converted by linebacker Devon Kennard for a touchdown, who ran it in from 13 yards out.
  3. Slow Start:  The Giants didn’t seem like they were ready to play this game from the opening whistler as the Lions jumped to a 14 point lead less than 10 minutes into the game. Slow starts are unusual for the Giants this season.

Hero: Detroit quarterback Matthew Stafford went 25/32 for 342 yards and 3 touchdowns/1 interception. Stafford made big plays for the lion hitting on two passes of over 40 yards for touchdowns. The Giants secondary made it easy for Stafford by not playing well in coverage, leaving a number of Detroit receivers wide open.

Goat: The Giants secondary has been horrible for the most part this season and it continue on Sunday against the Lions. Safety Antoine Bethea should not be starting for this team any longer as he continues to look lost on the field.

Final Thoughts:The Giants are now 2-6 at the halfway point of the season and their next opponent will be the Dallas Cowboys were they lost to on opening day. Rookie Darius Slayton had a fantastic game with two touchdowns, but for some strange reason quarterback Daniel Jones only threw to him twice (1st half) and never looked for him in the 2nd half. Running back Saquon Barkley doesn’t look as explosive since his return as he did in 2018. He can’t be at 100% as he doesn’t look like he’s getting to the hole as quickly as he did in 2018.
