Introduction:

The New York Giants continue their losing ways with their 7th consecutive loss to the hands of the Chicago Bears 19-14. Daniel Jones despite throwing two touch-down passes; continues to struggle with ball security with his 14th fumble of the season (9 starts); which led to a Bears touchdown.

The Giants jumped to an early 7-0 lead and they should have cushioned that lead to 10 points at the half, unfortunately; Aldrick Rosas missed to makeable field goals and the score remained 7-3 at the half.  The start of the 2nd half was all Bears as they 16 consecutive points in the 3rd quarter to pull away from the Giants. The Giants played hard but once again surrendered big plays on defense; which resulted in touch-downs by the Bears. Here are my top 4 reasons why the Giants lost to the Bears:

  • Giants Secondary: The Giants secondary made Mitch Trubisky look more like Tom Brady with poor coverage and equally poor tackling skills. Wide Receiver Allen Robinson resembled Jerry Rice by slicing the Giants cornerbacks; especially Corey Ballantine to a total of 131 yards and a touchdown. Anthony Miller also contributed with 77 yards on 6 catches.
  • Time of Possession: The Giants once again failed to win this category as the Bears had the ball offensively for 33:11 minutes to the Giants 26:49. The Giants defense is just not good enough to be on the field longer than their offense and once again today’s game proved it.
  • Total Yards: Offensively; the Giants looked as inept as their defense has this season and their inability to sustain drives and more the chains has become a weekly occurrence.  The Bears nearly had 100 more total yards than the Giants (336 to 243); which allowed the Bears to control the clock and the ball.
  • 3rd Down Efficiency: The Giants were a pathetic 1-12 on 3rd down compared to the Bears 4-15; which was slightly over 25%; which is not very good, but a lot better than 8.3% by the Giants.

Hero:

Allen Robinson with his 131 yards on just 6 receptions was a handful to cover (just ask Corey Ballantine). There’s a reason why Ballantine led the Giants in total tackles with nine…he was chasing Robinson throughout the entire game.

Goat:

Corey Ballantine as I mentioned above was totally manhandled by Allen Robinson and continuously picked on by Mitch Trubisky. The Giants have a group of very young cornerbacks and expecting them to succeed as rookies in the toughest position to play on defense for any player was a lot to expect. Growing pains are needed here and hopefully Baker and now Ballentine can turn the corner.

Final Thoughts

With the Giants lost and the Redskins win 19-16 over Detroit, both teams are now 2-9 with the Redskins still maintaining the #2 spot in the draft; just one spot ahead of the Giants due to the Giants earlier season win 24-3 over the Redskins.

The Giants will face the Redskins in week 16, but need to play the Packers, Eagles and Dolphins first. The Redskins upcoming games will be against the Panthers, Packers and Eagles before their showdown with the Giants that could determine which uniform Defensive End Chase Young might wear in 2020.
