Barkley and Beckham need contracts:  What’s the Hold Up

Due to the holdouts, the arrests and the injuries, I despise the six weeks before training camp. There are two specific situations that are beginning to rub me the wrong way.  Barkley and Beckham need contracts. What’s the Hold Up.

First: Saquon Barkley Needs to Sign

Why isn’t he signed.   Sure he has Kim Miale, the first female agent to represent a player drafted this high in the history of the draft.  Great.  Who does Kim Miale work for…Jay Z’s Roc Nation. Roc Nation signed Leonard Fournette in 2017.  Below is the quote by their representative.

“When we met with Leonard, we told him we thought he was a once-in-a-lifetime running back and that the partnerships he had an opportunity to do with us would be historic,” said Michael Yormark, president and chief of strategy and branding at Roc Nation.

Okay, Fournette can play, but one would figure that Barkley is a “Once in a Lifetime” running back? And why isn’t he signed?  People…we need to start this relationship off right,. more importantly Barkley says and does all the right things.  Why isn’t signed?   With the slotting of players…where is the wiggle room?  Come on Roc Nation..make this happen.  You can bet on this…the media drama is coming and we all know…drama isn’t good.  Not for the players, not for the franchize..not for the relationship.

The Giants are an old school franchise, that won’t change, yet they have never screwed a player.  Once a Giant…Always a Giant.   Find a pen, let’s get this done.

  •  OBJ signed his rookie contract with the Giants on May 19, 2014.

Second: Odell Beckham Jr. Needs a Deal

I have been “out” on the OBJ contract nonsense.   Today…it seems to have to crested with Julio Jones.  It’s a mess.  70% of the fan base wants OBJ to return at all costs.   10% think an all-world wide receiver is a luxury item, not a necessity and 20% want him back at manageable number.

  • Today the Falcons said that Jones is not getting a new contract.
  • Yesterday the Rams resigned Brandin Cooks to a 5 yr/80 million dollar contract.

Beckham is better than Brandin Cooks, hence, a deal needs to get done.  Five yrs/90MM…let’s go. The longer this goes on and with the Jones/Falcons cross roads…things get sticky.    If the Mara’s play hard ball, it seems like OBJ could be playing in Arizona or Chicago before you know it.  A hold out is one blip away from an injury.   The CBA makes the NFL a country club now…a hold out mostly likely leads to a soft tissue injury.  I understand the “get the most while you can” attitude, but folks this is 2018, therefore, NFL stars get paid.

  • On August 1, 2009, Nicks signed a five-year, $12.54 million contract. The deal includes a $6.5 million signing bonus.
  • Odell Beckham Jr. signed a 4 year, $10,406,198 contract with the New York Giants, including a $5.9MM signing bonus, $10.4MM guaranteed, and an average annual salary of $2.6MM. In 2018, Beckham Jr. will earn a base salary of $8.45MM.

Now $15MM to $17MM isn’t  enough…sad day.
