The New York Giants waited until the 7th round to address an area of need at Offensive Tackle. With the 232nd pick of the NFL Draft, the Giants selected “Big” George Asafo-Adjei out of the University of Kentucky. Dave Gettleman excels at finding diamonds in the rough on the Offensive Line. Giant fans are hoping that Asafo-Adjei can be another one of these late round finds.

Asafo-Adjei is a 6’5”, a 315-pound hulking human who has started at Right Tackle for the Wildcats and has gone up against some good competition in the SEC, namely his former teammate and the 7th overall pick Josh Allen in practice. He played in 48 games for the Wildcats over his career and was a Team Captain in his senior year last year.

“Big George” should be in the mix as a depth player as a rookie. He has played both Guard and Tackle throughout his career, and the Giants love to get offensive lineman with versatility. Growing up in the Bronx, the Giants brought Asago-Adjei back home. He is a humble guy with a tough upbringing, which makes him an easy player to root for.

Pros:

  • Utility Offensive Lineman that could play wherever you need him.
  • Very strong (31 reps at Pro Day; 10th highest at Combine)
  • Excelled at Run Blocking
  • Fits the “Hog Mollie” mold
  • Good footwork

Cons:

  • Doesn’t have great hands and will need to get stronger (core)
  • Will need to refine technique
  • Pass Protection needs work
  • Not overly athletic

Hard to project how Asafo-Adjei’s game translates to the NFL, but you like some of the traits this young man has.

Having succeeded in the SEC (O Lineman of the Week 2x last season) and played against the likes of Josh Allen every day in practice, “Big George” is certainly battle tested. Time will tell if Gettleman has found another diamond in the rough in the late rounds.
