Monday morning Java with Jones

By Michael J Basile, @MdoublejB

The Giants lost their second consecutive game and Daniel Jones may have had his toughest opponent he will see all season.  This year’s edition of Bill Belichick’s defense is the best in the NFL and may prove to be better than they were last year when they won the Super Bowl. The Pats rank 1st in total yards allowed, passing yards allowed, and opponents points per game.

Big Blue fell to 2-4 and the Patriots improved to 6-0 with the 35-14 final win.

The Digits:

Jones was 15-31 for 161 yards 1 TD and 3 interceptions.  He needs to take care of the football; 3 interceptions on the road usually leads to a loss. The first two were bad throws and the third a bad decision. He got fooled by Cornerback Stephon Gilmore staying underneath in coverage; however, Jones hasn’t been the only Belichick victim; rookie QBs are now 0-12 against him.

On a few occasions, Jones either held the ball too long or he tried to jam in the ball in a small window. His constant, “cool under pressure” is impressive; however, he needs to understand these are pro cornerbacks and they can make plays all over the filed. He also still needs to be taught how to slide. Wake up Shurmur?

Danny Dimes:

The rookie QB and the offense had a rough night, but to be fair they were without running backs Saquon Barkley and Wayne Gallman, and his top receivers, Evan Engram and Sterling Shepard.  The most impressive pass of the day was the touchdown to Golden Tate. Jones hit him in the hands and the wideout didn’t have to break stride.

As far as the running game…there was no running game.

Up next?

A home game against the Arizona Cardinals is a matchup that should allow Jones to have a nice bounce-back game.  The Gmen also have 10 days to get healthy on offense.  Jones gets to face off against fellow rookie QB, the 1st overall selection of the draft Kyler Murray.  I say Jones gets the better of him and the offense puts 30 + points on the board.
