Daniel Jones gets his 2nd win of 2019

The Giants beat up the Washington Redskins to win their 2nd straight game, and at 2-2 the season feels a lot different than it did just a few weeks ago.  After his memorable debut in Tampa the crowd was buzzing when Daniel Jones took the field for his first drive at MetLife stadium.  Let’s take a look at how he fared in his encore:

The Digits:

Jones finished 23-31 for 225 yards, a TD and 2 INTs.  He added 5 carries for 33 yards and defenses should get used to this because he will continue to make plays with his legs to extend drives, just as he did against the Redskins in key moments – Specifically on 3rd and 13 in the second half, he evaded the rush and broke through the grasp of 2 Redskin defenders and took off up the middle for a 16 yard run.

  • Big Blue was 8-13 on 3rd down conversations thanks to Jones.

Areas to improve:

Turnovers were there again; On 2 consecutive drives and Jones passes in the 2nd quarter, Giant drives ended with interceptions.  He’s still a rookie and is going to have to learn from this.  On both plays, he was pressured and tried to squeeze the ball into tight windows to Sterling Shepard

“Danny Dimes” territory:

When playing a winless team you need to jump on them early and Jones lead the Giants to 2 TD drives off the bat.

On the first scoring drive, he converted a 4th and 2 pass to Shepard with an accurate ball to the left; I don’t know too many rookie QBs making their 2nd start that would instill that kind of confidence – Pat Shurmur came out with empty backfield and let Jones make the play – impressive stuff.

A few plays later on 3rd and 6 from the Washington 15, Jones put a pass between 2 defenders in Shepard’s chest to keep the drive going.  There wasn’t much room, but DJ rifled it on the “87” of Sterling’s jersey.

The Giants are 2-2 and Jones is making plays with his arm and his legs; While not as memorable as game 1, Jones got the win and Giant fans are happy for at least another week.

Next Week:

The 2-2 Minnesota Vikings have a strong defense and come to MetLife next Sunday. This will be a real test for the kid early on in his career.  Someone should teach Jones to slide.
