Making the Case for Giants Rising Receiver Marcus Harris.

With training camp over and preseason winding down, the Giants will be facing final roster cuts soon. By August 26th, their 90-man summer list must be narrowed down to 75, and on August 30th the team will have its official 53-man team heading into the 2014 regular season.

Wide receiver is just one of the many positions being heavily competed for, if not one of the most highly talked about. First round draft pick Odell Beckham Jr. has been limited in practice, and has yet to play in a game, due to a persistent hamstring injury. This leaves many fans concerned, but has also set the stage for a number of other guys to shine.

Among those really making waves at camp is Marcus “Soup” Harris, wearing number 18. Harris, who impressed early on in the Giants off season workouts, was praised for his ability to get open easily. He has also made a number of notable catches, both in practices, and in game situations.

Harris, who played college ball at Murray State, was cut from the team last year following training camp, but was given a second chance this past December when the Giants signed him to a future deal. Part of what makes Harris deserving of a roster spot this year is the visible hard work he has put in. He has quickly moved up the depth chart this year, and has even taken some snaps with the ones in recent practices.

The other part of what makes Harris seemingly deserving of a spot, above veterans like Trindon Holliday and Mario Manningham, is his ability to take advantage of his time on the field. In the first preseason game against Buffalo, Harris had four catches for 49 yards, and had another four catches in the most recent game at Lucas Oil Stadium against the Colts.

Many of the predictions being put forth this week have Harris claiming one of the coveted 53 spots, including NY Giants Rush’s own projection. It also remains to be seen just how many receivers the team will keep. However, injuries to other receivers and the continued rate of high performance coming from guys like Harris make it seem more than likely that six receivers will be kept.
