NY Giants 2016 Draft Preview: RB Prospects

By Michael Stewart

In Part 3 of 6, we will continue with possible RB prospects that could fit into the Giants plans in 2016-17. GM Jerry Reese recently was asked his evaluation of the current RB’s on the roster (Jennings, Vereen, Williams and Darkwa), Reese was adamant that he feels that the Giants have talent and depth heading into the 2016-17 season. Could Reese be sending up a smoke screen, or does he truly believe what he’s saying. Regardless; the Giants could be in the market for another RB; whether it is via the draft or in free agency. Below are my next three RB prospects that could be available to the Giants in the mid rounds:

Jonathan Williams (RB) Arkansas 5’11/219

Projected a 3rd round selection: Williams has good size and quick feet. His ability to break arm tackles and read the hole quickly provided Williams with a solid 2014 season. A foot injury hampered his 2015 season, however; Williams was invited to the Senior Bowl and reminded many scouts of his talents. Williams needs to run with a lower center of gravity and not too upright at the NFL level. Williams could have been a lower round prospect if not for missing the entire 2015 season. Perhaps a solid combine could push him into the 2nd round.

Kenyan Drake (RB) Alabama 6’1/210

Projected 3-4 round selection: Kenyan Drake played in the shadows of Heisman Trophy winner Derrick Henry. Drake has a ton of versatility and contributed for the Crimson Tide in 2015. A combination of rushing (380 yards) and receiving (250 yards) complimented the Alabama offense. Drake has good size with the speed to match as he is effective between the tackles and around the edge. Drake’s biggest weakness is the injury bug (broken leg and arm); which will lead many scouts to question his durability at the NFL level.

Paul Perkins (RB) UCLA 5’10/210

Projected 3-4 round selection: Perkins is a slasher and best suited for the west coast offense (which the Giants employ). Perkins is patient with good vision and an explosive first step through the holes. He is effective between the tackles as well as turning the corner. Looks lighter than his 210 LB and that is one of the main reasons he is projected to go somewhere in the 3rd or 4th rounds. Many scouts wonder if he can handle the physical demands at the NFL level.

Final Thoughts:  Lots of option in this year’s draft at RB for the Giants to consider. Reese needs to possibly rethink his statement and access the current RB group on the roster. Giants need to find a RB that can be a difference maker on the field.
