This will be part 2 of the New York Giants free agents and today we will breakdown the offensive side of ball. The Giants offense struggled in 2020 and it was apparent that they lacked the depth at certain positions after injuries occurred. So let’s breakdown the Giants free agents on offense with give a verdict on each.

  • Colt McCoy (QB): McCoy performed as you would expect from a backup Quarterback and if the Giants have intentions of bringing him back in a similar role and price; it would make sense. If not, then look for his replacement via free agency. Verdict: Re-sign for 1 year at the same price.
  • Cameron Fleming (OT): Fleming was the starting Right Tackle for the majority of the games for the Giants in 2020, however; Rookie OT Matt Peart has shown the ability in his limited action of filling Fleming’s shoes without a problem. With Peart being given full access at the starting Right Tackle position, Fleming’s role for 2021 would be as a backup and if he is fine with that; then a return is possible: Verdict: Re-sign 1 year at same amount as 2020.
  • Spencer Pulley (C): Pulley was never able to get the opportunity he wanted after signing a 3 year deal with the Giants and with Nick Gates fully secured as the Giants center; the option of re-signing Pulley has long since passed. Verdict: Move on.
  • Dion Lewis (RB): Lewis was brought by the Giants to be the 3d down specialist and provide production on special teams. Unfortunately; neither of the two transpired and the Giants should move on from him. Verdict: Move on.
  • Alfred Morris (RB): Morris was brought in off the practice squad to add depth to the depleted NFL roster at running back and had some highlighted moments for the Giants. However; he will be 33 years old in 2021 and the Giants should look for a younger running back in 2021. Verdict: Move on.
  • Casey Kreiter (LS): Kreiter was a reliable long snapper and gave the Giants what they needed at that position. Kreiter had a $1.4M contract in 2020; which is relatively cheap in today’s NFL. The Giants also have Carson Tinker on their roster who will be 31 and under contract in 2021 with a $990K tag. Not much difference between them in salary and it’s not to find suitable long snappers, so I expect no change here. Verdict: Re-sign Kreiter to a similar one year deal.
  • Wayne Gallman (RB): Timing is everything in the world of sports and Wayne Gallman couldn’t have picked a better time to showcase his running skills in 2020. With Saquan Barkley out for the year, the Giants turned to Gallman to inherit a more defining role in the Giants running game and he responded with his best year as a pro with 682 yards on 147 carries (4.6 per carry) and 6 touchdowns. The Giants could look to re-sign Gallman, but I believe they will have a limit and I’m not too sure it will match the same as Gallman’s who should be looking to cash in for a starting role. Verdict: Re-sign only if the amount doesn’t exceed $3M. If so, need to move on.
  • Austin Mack (WR): Mack was a UDFA signee is 2020 out of Ohio State and saw the most playing time among the practice squad wide receivers in 2020. The cost on re-signing Mack shouldn’t be an issue as he would add depth at a position that needs depth. Verdict: Re-sign him.
  • C. J Board (WR): Board provided very little production in my opinion in 2020 and with younger receivers waiting in the wings and the projection of the Giants looking at free agency and the draft to add more; the writing is on the wall for Board. Verdict: Move on.
  • David Sills (WR): The Giants have recently placed the ERFA tag on Sills (Exclusive Rights Free Agent), so Sills isn’t going anywhere in 2021. Sills has the size at the WR position that the team lacks and many project Sills will be given every opportunity to have a more defining role in 2021. Verdict: Re-Signed.

The Giants have made some minor moves to their rosters with the additions of several players to add depth as this trend will be a revolving door until the start of the 2021 season. It’s apparent that the Giants offense struggled in 2020; largely due to the season ending injury to running back Saquan Barkley. However; even a healthy Barkley wouldn’t have given the Giants the offensive production that this team’s moving forward in 2021. Which is why I believe the focus should be primarily on the offense, specifically acquiring a top tier wide receiver in free agency.
