Why the Giants Lost to the Rams

By Michael Stewart

The New York Giants ran into a tough opponent in the Los Angeles Rams and were beaten convincingly 51-17. This was by far the worst defeat for the Giants in recent years and certainly this season as they were beaten in nearly every category on both sides of the ball.

Rams quarterback Jared Goff was the best player on the field and is showing why the Rams selected him #1 overall in the 2016 draft.

Top reasons why the Giants lost

  1. Quarterback Jared Goff: Goff played a nearly perfect performance as he dissected the Giants secondary for 311; which included 4 touchdowns passes with no interceptions. Goff was never sacked and/or had any pressure that disrupted his timing in the pocket.
  2. Turnovers: The Giants needed to play a perfect game if they wanted to have any chance in beating the Rams and they failed miserably with 3 costly turnovers.
  3. Big plays: The Rams moved the ball at will against a Giants defense that looked more like a high school football team. The Rams scored on two long TD passes from Goff to Watkins (62 yards) and Woods (52 yards), while also connecting other pass plays 35 yards or more; three other times. The Giants longest pass completion from scrimmage was a 37 yard pass completion to wide receiver Sterling Shepard.

Hero: QB Jared Goff: Goff was outstanding and looked more like a 10 year All Pro veteran; rather than a 2nd year quarterback. The lack of a pass rush by the Giants gave Goff more than enough time to extend the field and make big plays for the Rams offense.

Goat: The entire Giants team: Giant fans should be very upset as the entire Giants team played as if they were still on their bye week. No energy, no urgency and certainly no ability on either side of the ball. Give the Rams credit for playing from the start of this game and not stopping until the final whistle. Unfortunately; the Giants are arguably the most disappointing team in terms of expectations this season.

Final Thoughts: : It looked like many of the players gave up often and early in this game and that is a clear reflection of Head Coach Ben McAdoo, who is clearly on the hot seat and rightly so.  The Giants have given up on this season and with 8 games remaining stand 1-7 with only Cleveland and San Francisco currently winless.

It’s a hard pill to swallow when you see running back Todd Gurley running over and around the Giants defenders and wondering why GM Jerry Reese selected offensive tackle Ereck Flowers over Gurley. The Giants will travel to face the San Francisco 49ers next week for the battle of most likely the 2nd overall pick in the 2018 NFL draft.
