Trading JPP are Very Good Signs of Things to Come

By Michael Stewart @golderbad

In a very unexpected move by the New York Giants, GM Dave Gettleman traded defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul and a 2018 4th round pick (102) to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for their 2018 3rd (69) and 4th round (108) picks.

This was a deal that GM Dave Gettleman later said he couldn’t refuse and it clears cap space not just for this upcoming season, but more significantly in the 2019 when Safety Landon Collins and Wide Receiver Odell Beckham Jr. will be free agents. With Olivier Vernon and JPP being very similar and the fact that the Giants believe that Vernon is more suitable for the 3-4 defense. Also, add in the two additions the Giants got in free agency in Martin and Mauro, GM Dave Gettleman believes that this move will benefit the Giants.

Immediately following the trade, many speculated that the Giants could focus on drafting a defensive end to replace JPP and that someone is Bradley Chubb.

Despite the talent of Chubb, many feel that selecting him at 2 could be a little too soon, however; the Giants could trade back a few spots and still have the chance to get Chubb. The Reports out Giants land is that the Giants have rated Saquon Barkley, Bradley Chubb and Quenton Nelson as their top 3 prospects.

So if that’s accurate and if Barkley is selected 1st overall by the Browns; perhaps the Giants could find a trading partner and still get Chubb or Nelson with additional picks.

Thus far, this has been the most entertaining off season for the Giants in a very long time and I wouldn’t be shocked at all if more surprises follow. When Dave Gettleman arrived as the new GM for the Giants, he made it very clear that he was going to fix the Giants and thus far, he is making all the right moves.
