NY Giants Rush: A Tight End Worth Gambling On

The New York Giants do not gamble on many players when building a roster.

There is one Free Agent player in 2017 that has my attention.  His injuries should not be ignored.  In fact, three months ago the rumor was this player was mulling retirement. His name is Jordan Cameron.  I’m still intrigued:

  • He plays a position the Giants desperately need to enhance the sluggish, one-dimensional offense.
  • He is still young enough to play the game at a high level and it seems he could have something to prove to the world if healthy.

Three months ago, Cameron was placed on IR by the Miami Dolphins after suffering what was determined his 4th concussion in 4 years. While his records do not show the “grade” of these concussions, 4 in 4 years makes sense that his head will never fully recover.

Jordan was drafted by the Cleveland Brown in the 4th round in 2011.  After two years, Jordan had a break-out year in 2013 racking up 917 yards | 7 TD’s | 80 rec | 11.5 yds a catch and made it to the Pro Bowl.  He missed week 16 with a concussion.

A little more than half-way through 2014 Cameron suffered a season ending concussion. It would be his last in dreadful Cleveland.

In 2015 he signed a two-year/15 Million dollar deal to come to Miami; however he was never on the same page with QB, Ryan Tannehill, who is average at best. That season was a full, healthy year for Cameron, but he only produced 35 receptions| 385 yards | 3 Td’s.

In 2016 Cameron attempted to regain his 2013 production.  After only 3 games he received another concussion sidelining him for the reason of the season.  In week #2 against the New England Patriots the division rival, Cameron pulled down 5 catches for 50 yards and Touchdown!  A great way to start earning that 7MM a year.

If Cameron is healthy and still wants to play ball, The Giants should sign him.  He is a dynamic player with the ball in his hands and needs the right system.  Cameron wants a new start with a proven QB.  Think of the potential,  28 years old, 6′ 5″ 265, runs a 4.5 in the 40.  If healthy he spells Kevin Boss.

Prove it contract:

His body is healthy, the system is perfect and his price tag will be cheap. Cameron will be forced to sign on for a “prove it” year contract like Vernon Davis did when he signed with Redskins.  Davis who was a Pro Bowl player for 49ers is older but has no history of concussions. His one year 1.3MM contract had incentives that topped out a 4.5MM.   Jordan Cameron would be forced to sign such a deal and because NFL contracts are written on bar napkins…why not.
