Giants Looking at Two Veteran Coaches

With the firing of Pat Shurmur on Black Monday, the New York Giants started their search for their 21st Head Coach of this franchise (and 3rd since Coughlin was fired in 2015).  The Giants were perennially known as one of the more patient franchises in the NFL, but that is no longer the case, having fired both Shurmur and Ben McAdoo after just two seasons each.  It is imperative that ownership and Dave Gettleman get this next hire right.

The Giants have an extensive list of candidates that they are interviewing currently.  Two of the bigger names on this list are former Packers coach Mike McCarthy and current Patriots Offensive Coordinator, Josh McDaniels.  Both coaches have had success as offensive minds in the NFL, which is significant for the New York Giants having just drafted Daniel Jones and Saquon Barkley.  The cupboard is not bare on the offensive side of the ball and hiring an offensive-minded coach could take this offensive to the next level.

Let’s investigate both Candidates.

Mike McCarthy

  • Former Packers Head Coach from 2006-2018 (Super Bowl XLV Champ)
  • Career record of 125-77.  Dominated the NFC North for most of his 12-year tenure.
  • Started the “McCarthy Project”, which is a collaboration of former coaches over the past year to self-improve and study the league while he has been away from the game, while staying on top of new trends.  He has rebuilt his playbooks and has done a deep dive into analytics.
  • Had a tenuous relationship with star Quarterback, Aaron Rodgers, which was a major cause for his dismissal.
  • Won 10 playoff games with the likes of Rodgers and Favre but had only one Super Bowl appearance.

Josh McDaniels

  • Current Offensive Coordinator/QB Coach for the Patriots.  Manned this position from 2005-2008, then again from 2012-present.
  • Head Coach of the Denver Broncos from 2009-2010.  Finished with a 11-17 record.
  • Tenure with Broncos was rocky.  Had feuds with veterans Jay Cutler and Brandon Marshall.
  • Announced as the new Head Coach of the Indianapolis Colts in February of 2018.  McDaniels withdrew from the position on the same day and announced that he was staying with the Patriots.
  • Controversy seems to follow McDaniels at every stop.

Mike McCarthy is set to interview on January 3rd.  Josh McDaniels’ interview has yet to be set.

Both have coached two of the most prolific quarterbacks the league has seen. That can only be considered a “positive” in the development of Daniel Jones.
