Introduction: This is part 7 of 10 in a series of player spotlights as the New York Giants are counting on TE Evan Engram to be a vital cog in the offensive machine in 2020. However; if Engram starts off the season either still on the injury list or struggles to get going, TE Kaden Smith could find himself in a more demanding role in 2020. The Giants claimed Smith off waivers in 2019 from the San Francisco 49ers and in 9 games provided the Giants with solid play (31 receptions/268 yards and 3 touchdowns).

These are not mind blowing stats, but a serviceable production to go along with solid blocking. Smith’s role was expected to increase in 2020 regardless of Engrams availability or not as the Giants new Offensive Coordinator Jason Garrett likes to employ double tight ends and utilize them more offensively. Smith has similar traits of former Giant tight end Jake Ballard, who provided the Giants with steady play and consistency.

Final Thoughts: The Giants aren’t expecting the next Mark Bavaro in Smith, but they are looking for him to improve and be more productive in 2020. If Evan Engram can return healthy and provide the Giants with his game changing ability, it will only give Smith more opportunity to succeed.
