At the time of this article, the New York Giants will be entering the 2020 training camp with five quarterbacks on their 90 man roster. It is unclear at this time if Head Coach Joe Judge and GM Dave Gettleman will go with two or three quarterbacks on the final roster.

Daniel Jones will be entering his second year and the expectations are high on his development and taking it to the next level. The other quarterbacks on the roster are Colt McCoy, Alex Tanney, Cooper Rush, and UDFA signee Case Cookus. Of course, the Giants could place one of the quarterbacks onto the practice squad if they feel comfortable enough to warrant such a move; so that would leave one or two candidates being released.

No Guarantees:

With the uncertainty of training camp and pre-season games being handled possibly differently due to COVID-19, how much opportunity can any of the backup quarterbacks really get to showcase their skills and earn a spot on the final roster? Based on Joe Judge previous comments regarding an open competition, it appears that the only quarterback guaranteed a spot is Daniel Jones. Each backup quarterback brings something to the table and it should be a very competitive position to keep an eye on as we get closer to opening day.

Final Thoughts: New Offensive Coordinator Jason Garrett was the catalyst in the signing of Cooper Rush with their days with the Dallas Cowboys. Rush could have a leg up on the other backup quarterbacks with his prior knowledge of Garrett’s offensive playbook. Under GM Dave Gettleman; the Giants have kept three quarterbacks on the final roster and at this point; it’s unclear if Joe Judge will continue that tread with three quarterbacks entering the 2020 season.

The million-dollar question is: who will backup Daniel Jones? Over the next few months, I will be spotlighting certain quarterbacks with more detailed analysis leading up to the start of the season.
